A very recent baby boom among our colleagues and friends has made me reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly of newborn vs toddler parenting. Yes, I must admit that I occasionally get "baby lust," as they say, for those early days when Holden was a wee wee one. But then I remember the 2-hr feedings and late night wake ups, and things stop seeming so rosy. So I thought it would be fun to consider some of things that make the "newborn" stage great, and some of the things that definitely don't!
Five Great Things about the "Newborn" Stage
5) Limited mobility (no baby proofing required!)
4) Communication is Direct (sure, they cry a lot, but it only means one of 2 or 3 things)
3) Need to do something? Just wear them! (I can't emphasize this benefit enough)
2) Car-seat sleeping (you can still bring them to parties at this stage, and they'll snooze through the entire thing)
1) The way they fall asleep on your chest for hours (nothing better!)
Five Not-So-Great Things about the "Newborn" Stage
5) Lack of adult sleep (no explanation required)
4) Limited mobility (I just LOVE watching my toddler run around with glee)
3) Breast Pumps, Bottles, and the constant dish washing, ugh
2) Sooo much diaper changing
1) No hugs, no blowing kisses, no "mamas," no giggles (these things light up my day, every day)

Congrats to Kimberly and Dave!
A quick congrats to our friends Kimberly and Dave (who I know check out this blog from time to time), for their beautiful new baby girl who was born two weeks ago. Mike and I had a chance to visit the little lady this weekend, and even though she was born bigger than our guy, we couldn't believe how tiny she was! And a full head of wavy hair at that. Jealous about that one.
Memory plays funny tricks on you when you have a growing baby of your own because, um, I totally forgot how to hold a baby that small. They just fold right into your arms at that stage. I soo forgot about that. I know you're not getting much sleep guys, and I know it can suck at times, but treasure the newborn stage, journal about it, and savor it, because before you know it, it's gone. But of course, there are always great adventures to come. (And yes, you will get to sleep again!)

CONGRATS to Noel and Elissa -- and, reality just got immeasurably closer...
Huge congratulations go out to Noel and Elissa, who just had their first newby enter the world . . . Ezekiel Shinkei Weichbrodt, or "Zeke" as I'm sure he will be affectionately called from hence forward (although I can totally hear Elissa using the full "Ezekiel" for some disciplinary actions not too far down the road).

How amazing is this moment!?! It has certainly pushed our own life-changing moment much closer (not in time, but in our ability to make it all seem real). To really think that we'll be experiencing this indescribable life event in a few months . . . and that there will suddenly be a new little guy completely dependent on us, and part of our family . . . something we brought into this world, to be here when we're gone. I actually had the real thought today that Zeke and Short Stranger will soon come to know each other (and I let our little guy know, saying "hey, you're future buddy was born today -- you'll get to meet him this fall . . . and probably beat him in you're first baby race, right?").
Anywho, not to get all mushy, but just trying to capture some feelings in the moment. Just simply amazing.
